Teach

Get Reading Oklahoma is offering two distinct programs to help literacy providers across the state reach more adult learners. Both GED Connection and TV411 are interactive tools that can enhance a learner’s experience and help them reach their goals.

What is GED Connection?
GED Connection is a 39-episode television/video series and workbooks that helps adult students advance toward their GED and improve the basic skills needed at the workplace. Developed as part of the PBS LiteracyLink project, the series and workbooks cover the five areas included in the GED exam. Practice tests show learners what to expect and which skills and content areas they need to strengthen, helping to build confidence for test day.

Workbooks for Learners
Three full-color workbooks (Language Arts: Reading & Writing, Science & Social Studies, and Mathematics) provide skill-building and test-taking practice. Pre-tests and practice tests help students evaluate their readiness; an answer key includes explanations. See print previews.

Learners should first check with their literacy provider to see if they have workbooks. Workbooks can also be ordered from the KET Adult Learning Web site. You may also order workbooks by calling Barbara Farha at 1-800-354-9067.

Online Activities, Lessons, and Practice Tests at www.pbs.org/literacy provide interactive coursework and more practice answering GED-type questions. Learners can save their work in an online portfolio.

What is TV411?
TV411 is a 30-episode television series for adults who want to improve their literacy skills. Produced by the Adult Literacy Media Alliance, TV411 materials allow adult learners to practice basic skills in many ways: watching the series in the comfort of their home; enrolling in a literacy class that uses the TV411 series as a learning tool; or using the materials along with a tutor.

TV411 gives adult strategies for managing their family’s health and finances and for moving ahead at work so they can serve as their own best advocates. With TV411, everyday situations become educational opportunities. Learners read the newspaper and figure out new words by using context clues and the dictionary. They practice ratios and proportion when adapting recipes. They practice subject-verb agreement and proper punctuation so that their cover letters make the right impression. Also, knowing how to convert a percent into a decimal becomes a tool for understanding interest rates, calculating sale prices and tracking spending.

Perhaps more importantly, TV411 builds confidence and motivation so that learning doesn’t stop when the television is off and the books are closed.
